President Bola Tinubu has signed a landmark Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) with Brazil, paving the way for direct flights between Nigeria and South America’s largest economy. The agreement was signed on Monday, August 25, 2025, during Tinubu’s two-day state visit to Brasília.
This is contained in statement by the Special Adviser On Media and Communications to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Fetus Keyamo, Tunde Moshood, who said that the Nigerian leader was warmly received in Brasília by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil, which marked a significant step in strengthening bilateral ties between the two largest economies in their respective continents.
The Brazilian President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in his remarks, lauded the partnership, emphasizing Brazil’s readiness to deepen ties with Nigeria in multiple spheres, including aviation, agriculture, and infrastructure development.
Highlights of the Agreement include
-Direct Air Connectivity which Establishes a new framework for direct flights between Nigeria and Brazil, enhancing trade, tourism, investment, and people-to-people exchanges.
-Economic Integration which is expected to foster stronger economic integration, facilitate cultural ties, and enhance diplomatic cooperation between both nations.
This a strategic milestone which underscores President Tinubu’s administration commitment to expanding Nigeria’s global partnerships and creating enabling environments for commerce and mobility.
These and other outcomes were as a result of the high-level discussions when President Tinubu met with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at the President of the Brazilian Senate, the President of the Chamber of Deputies, and the President of the Supreme Federal Court.
Discussions between Nigerian and Brazilian delegations across various sectors, including aviation, agriculture, and infrastructure development were also held
With this move there will be a boost to trade and tourism as direct flights will open fresh avenues for trade, tourism, and investment between Nigeria and Brazil.
The diplomatic cooperation will strengthen bilateral ties between the two largest economies in Africa and South America.
