NiMet Issues Weather Outlook, urges Nigerians to Braces for Thunderstorms and Flash Floods between 7th – 9th August, 2025

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), has issued a weather outlook for the next three days, predicting thunderstorms and moderate rains across various regions of the country.
Day 1: Thursday 7th August, 2025
Northern Region:
There are prospects of morning thunderstorms with moderate rains over parts of Adamawa, Sokoto,
Kebbi, Gombe, Bauchi and Borno states. Later in the afternoon/evening hours, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over the entire region. There is high possibility of flood occurring over parts of Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Borno, Adamawa and Taraba states during the forecast period.
Central Region:
There are prospects of light rains over parts of Benue, the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Plateau, Kwara
and Nasarawa states during the morning hours. In the afternoon/evening hours, thunderstorms with light
rains are anticipated over the entire region. There is high possibility of flood occurring over parts of
Plateau, Benue, Niger, Kogi and Nasarawa states during the forecast period.
Southern Region:
Cloudy skies are expected over the region with prospects of intermittent light rains to affect parts of
Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Abia, Imo, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Edo states. during the
morning hours. The rains are expected to continue over the entire region during the afternoon/evening
hours. There is high possibility of flood occurring over parts of Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Edo, Anambra, Imo,
Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River and Delta states during the forecast period.
Day 2: Friday 8th August, 2025
Northern Region:
There are prospects of morning thunderstorms with moderate rains over parts of Borno, Yobe, Jigawa,
Taraba, Adamawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Kaduna and Kano states. Later during the afternoon to evening hours,
thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over the entire region. There is high possibility of flood
occurring over parts of Adamawa, Kaduna and Taraba states during the forecast period.
Central Region:
There are prospects of light rains over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Kwara, Plateau
and Benue states during the morning period. In the afternoon/evening hours, thunderstorms with light
rains are anticipated over the entire region. There is high possibility of flood occurring over parts of the
Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, Benue, Niger and Nasarawa states during the forecast period.
Southern Region:
Cloudy skies are expected over the region with prospects of intermittent light rains to affect parts of Ekiti,
Osun, Edo, Ondo, Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta and
Rivers states during the morning hours. In the afternoon/evening hours, intermittent light rains are
expected over the entire region. There is high possibility of flood occurring over parts of Ondo, Edo, Cross
River and Akwa Ibom states during the forecast period.
Day 3: Saturday 9 th August, 2025
Northern Region:
Morning thunderstorms with moderate rains are anticipated over parts of Gombe, Adamawa, Taraba,
Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Bauchi and Kaduna states. Thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over
the entire region during the afternoon/evening hours. There is high possibility of flood occurring over
parts of Kaduna, Kebbi, Taraba and Adamawa states during the forecast period.
Central Region:
Thunderstorms with Light rains are anticipated over the entire region during the forecast period.
There is high possibility of flood occurring over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, Niger and
Nasarawa states during the forecast period.
Southern Region:
Intermittent light rains are expected over the entire region during the forecast period.
There is high possibility of flood occurring over parts of Ondo, Edo and Lagos states during the forecast
period.
Advisory
i. Driving under heavy rain should be avoided.
ii. The states with possibility of Flash Flood should active emergency response system, immediately.
iii. To avoid leaching of nutrients, farmers should refrain from applying fertilizer and pesticides right before
the rains.
iv. Ensure warm clothing for the vulnerable persons due to low night-time temperatures.
v. Ensure that loose objects are fastened to avoid collision.
vi. Disconnect electrical appliances from electrical sockets.
v. Stay away from tall trees to avoid impact from falling branches and broken trees.
vi. Airline operators are advised to get airport-specific weather reports (flight documentation) from NiMet
for effective planning in their operations.
