INEC Warns Against Short Notice for LG Polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has cautioned State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs) against issuing short notices for Local Government elections. INEC described the 21-day notice period as a breach of the Electoral Act 2022 and the Supreme Court’s judgment.

INEC emphasized that the short notice period violates the Electoral Act.

The commission referenced a subsisting judgment that supports the need for adequate notice periods.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, expressed concern during a meeting with the Forum of State Independent Electoral Commissions of Nigeria (FOSIECON).

The warning highlights INEC’s commitment to upholding electoral laws and ensuring fair electoral processes.
