Nigerian Olympic Committee President Urges Athletes to Adapt to Continental Cuisine

Engr Habu Ahmed Gumel, President of the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC), has called on Nigerian athletes participating in the maiden Africa Schools Games in Algeria to adapt to the continental dishes provided by the host country. Gumel emphasized the importance of embracing international cuisine, stating that athletes must be willing to try new foods, especially during global competitions.
Gumel encouraged athletes to improvise and adjust to the meals offered, highlighting that other countries have accepted the cuisine.
The NOC President stressed that proper nutrition is crucial for athletes’ performance and overall well-being.
Dr. Robinson Okosun, the team’s psychologist, echoed Gumel’s advice emphasizing the need for balanced eating to maintain strength and prevent illness.
Although athletes miss Nigerian dishes like Garri:A staple made from cassava, often served with soups like Ogbono and Egusi; Amala: A traditional dish made from yam or cassava flour, served with Ewedu and Ggbegiri.
There are rich vegetable soups like White soup, Black soup, Banga soup, Fisherman soup, Beniseed soup, groundnut soup, Afang, Onugbu, Ifo riro and Ugwu which are flavorful and nutritious.
Adapting to new cuisine can benefit athletes in several ways will provide a balanced diet tailored to their needs and can enhance performance.
Trying new foods can be a valuable cultural experience. In addition, eating a variety of foods can help prevent illnesses and maintain overall health.
