WHO Chief Praises Rwanda’s Response to Marburg Outbreak

World Health Organization (WHO), Director-General praised Rwanda’s leadership in combating the Marburg virus disease outbreak. During a media briefing, he commended President Kagame and Health Minister Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana for their swift response.

Rwanda has reported no new cases in six days, and most patients have recovered. The country’s advanced critical care and life support systems have saved lives, a first in Africa’s history of viral hemorrhagic fever outbreaks.

The WHO chief highlighted Rwanda’s efforts in vaccine trials and regulatory system strengthening. He thanked partners, including the Sabin Vaccine Institute and Oxford University, for supporting these initiatives.

Rwanda’s use of technology for real-time information and operational efficiency impressed the WHO Director-General. He also applauded the country’s investment in local vaccine production with BioNTech.

Despite progress, continued vigilance is crucial. WHO advises against travel and trade restrictions, which harm Rwanda’s economy without adding benefits.

The WHO will continue supporting Rwanda’s response efforts, ensuring the outbreak is declared over.
