NDLEA Takes War Against Drugs to Sports Sector

In a bold move to combat drug abuse in Nigeria’s sports industry, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Kwara State Command, led by Commander Fatima Abiola Popoola, visited Kwara United Football Club on October 5, 2024. The club, based in Ilorin, is a top contender in the Nigerian Professional Football League.
The Mission:
The NDLEA’s awareness campaign, part of Brigade General Buba Marwa’s War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) initiative, aims to educate athletes about the dangers of drug abuse and doping in sports. Commander Popoola, a certified trainer of the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime (UNODC), emphasized that drug abuse undermines fair play, a core value in football .
The Impact:
The engagement was a resounding success, with the team management receiving WADA Ambassador lapel pins and copies of “Drug Today,” a magazine showcasing the NDLEA’s anti-drug efforts. Players enthusiastically took photos with Commander Popoola, pledging their support for the “Say No to Drug Abuse” mantra.

Kwara State has a rich sports history, having involved notable figures like Clement Westerhof, former coach of the Nigerian Super Eagles. By targeting the sports industry, the NDLEA aims to protect young athletes from the devastating effects of drug abuse and promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.
