A HISTORIC VISIT: Strengthening Ties Between Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea

In a landmark state visit, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria traveled to Equatorial Guinea from August 14th to 16th, 2024, at the invitation of President Obiang Nguema Mbasogo. The visit aimed to fortify the robust and friendly relations between the two nations, exploring areas of cooperation, economic growth, security, and stability in Africa.
The two leaders signed a bilateral agreement on the construction and operation of the Gulf of Guinea Pipeline, facilitating trade in natural gas and enhancing energy security. They also committed to holding the Sixth Joint Cooperation Commission to sign additional agreements and monitor existing ones.
President Mbasogo expressed support for Nigeria’s leadership in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), while both leaders condemned terrorism and piracy, resolving to work together to address these threats. They reaffirmed their commitment to African-led solutions to African problems and limiting foreign interference.
The visit concluded with a joint statement, reiterating their support for the United Nations 2030 Agenda, the African Union’s Agenda 2063, and calls for an African Permanent Seat on the UN Security Council. President Tinubu extended an invitation to President Mbasogo to visit Nigeria, which was gladly accepted.
This historic visit marked a significant milestone in strengthening the ties between Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea, paving the way for enhanced cooperation, economic growth, and regional stability.
