UN Resident Coordinator Concludes Visits to Lagos, Enugu, and Anambra, Urges SDG Acceleration

In a bid to fast-track the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) ahead of the 2030 target, United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Malick Fall, recently concluded a series of strategic engagements in Lagos, Enugu, and Anambra states.
His visit comes on the heels of the 2024 Sustainable Development Goals Report, which indicates that only 17% of the SDG targets are on track.
Throughout his week-long visit, Fall engaged with key stakeholders, including governors, commissioners, private sector leaders, civil society organizations, traditional rulers, women, and youth groups.
His central message was clear: accelerate efforts to achieve the SDGs to enhance the well-being of people and the planet.
In Enugu, Fall met with Governor Barrister Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, who reaffirmed the state’s alignment with the UN’s mandates and SDGs. During his visit to Owo Smart School, Fall praised the integration of technology in education, which he believes sets students on a path to a brighter future.
At a Type-3 hospital in Agbogugu, he highlighted innovations in healthcare and the expansion of primary health centers as crucial steps toward inclusive health services.
Fall also engaged with women and youth groups, expressing admiration for their active role in advancing the SDGs.
He encouraged Nigerian women to remain optimistic about increased female representation in politics.
In Anambra, Fall’s discussions with Governor Prof. Charles Soludo covered a range of critical issues, including poverty alleviation, environmental threats, social protection, health, and education.
While addressing traditional rulers, he underscored their importance in driving the SDGs at the grassroots level.
A visit to Eziabor village highlighted the severe soil erosion challenges in Anambra, prompting Fall to call for urgent interventions from all levels of government and development partners.
At Onitsha market, he recognized the resilience and entrepreneurial spirit of the local people, advocating for the integration of innovation and skill development in commerce.
In Lagos, Fall met with Tony Elumelu, Chairman of Heirs Holdings, UBA, and Transcorp groups, to emphasize the private sector’s role in accelerating the SDGs. He lauded Elumelu’s contributions to youth development through the Tony Elumelu Foundation.
At the Africa Social Impact Summit (ASIS) press briefing, Fall reiterated the UN’s partnership with Sterling One Foundation, expressing hope that ASIS2024 would provide crucial insights for rescuing the SDGs in Nigeria and Africa.
Reflecting on interactions with young tech innovators in Lagos, Fall praised their solutions to societal issues, emphasizing the role of technology and innovation in transforming Africa and expanding financial inclusion.
As the highest-ranking representative of the UN Development System in Nigeria, Fall continues to lead efforts to implement the 2030 Agenda, coordinating UN support to the country.
