APCON Ag Registrar Solicits Cooperation of Media in Political Advertising, inaugurates New Members

The Ag. Registrar, Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON), Mrs Ijedi Iyoha has called on media houses to strictly adhere to the regulations and guidelines of APCON so as to have an ethical and advertising messages devoid of hate speech and molestation.

Mrs Iyoha said this while giving a goodwill message at the Advertising Practitioners Association, Abuja Chapter (APAAC), Annual Advertising Stake holders Lecture, Youth Mentoring Programme & Dinner on Thursday 29 at Hawthorn Suites, Abuja.

She urged APAAC Chairman and members to keep up with the tempo of enlightening and interacting with the public on the advertising practices.

The APCON registrar recalled that on October 19 this year there was a seminar on Political Marketing of which a communiqué was raised. She called on all practitioners to make sure that the communiqué is propagated in order to grow the advertising profession.

Mrs Iyioha commended APAAC for holding back to back seminar this year and noted that association’s involving all practitioners in other parts of the country are yet to meet the pace of APAAC. She advised APCON registered practitioners in Abuja to join APAAC.

Earlier in his welcome address the chairman of APAAC Alhaji Aliyu Ibrahim gave the welcome speech and expressed satisfaction, “I am glad to warmly welcome you all to today’s program.

Thank you for availing yourselves to be in attendance as I know that the speaker of this program will do justice to the topic and we will all leave here happy as our notion of advertising will change after this event thank u all for coming” he said.

The Managing Director, Chief Executive Officer, TBWA/CONCEPT, Mr. Kelechi Nwosu, while presenting a paper titled “Patronizing Non- Professionals in Advertising: Cons and Cons” noted that even the country cannot achieve global image without using professional marketing and branding experts.

Mr Nwosu’s captivating presentation was intermittently garnished with several displays of advertisements created by professionals and the ones done by quarks/nonprofessionals for participants to see the difference.

He highlighted “your brand gain value when you employ the service of a professional but when you choose nonprofessionals to do it, you loose cost and your product loose value.”

He said the in the UK, the government has a Government Communication Services. An agency where all government marketing and branding programs are determined and professionals are invited to bid for implementation.

He also said the USA, India and other countries have organised marketing/ communication bodies and applied even in their military services. He advised the FGN to adopt the UK model to achieve efficiency

Mr Kelechi also advised APCON to push for more reforms and make sure that media houses are compliant.

He urged APAAC to get more involved in promoting professionalism and also understand that strategy and pro activity is key, while every practitioner should connect to relevant sectorial or related bodies to enrich their knowledge.

The Honourable Commissioner for Information and Orientation of Bayelsa State, Daniel Iworiso Markson in his goodwill message commended APAAC and said that Bayelsa State is cooperating with APCON implementing ethical advertising.

Later in the day, the Ag. Registrar inaugurated new members into the Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON) and advised them to adhere to the APCON guidelines as established by Act No. 55 of 1988 CAP A7 LFN 2004 of  the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
