Lagos, Nigeria: The 1984 Set of Lagos Baptist Secondary School (LABASCO), Orile Agege, has unveiled a landmark initiative to support visually impaired learners within the LABASCO community and across Agege, in commemoration of World Braille Day 2026 (4 January 2026).

Led by the Class President, Akindele Ojo JP, representatives of the ’84 Set paid a follow up courtesy visit to the Executive Chairman of Orile Agege LCDA, Hon. IDOWU Akinola Abiodun (popularly known as Dodo), to seek collaboration on a transformative literacy and dignity-driven intervention. The delegation urged the Chairman to rally the support of:

Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly

Hon. Abdulganiyu Vinod Obasa, Chairman, Agege Local Government Area

The alumni stressed the need to launch a sustainable, local-first strategy that guarantees access to education, independence, and dignity for visually impaired learners.

Theme: “Access is Dignity. Literacy is Freedom.”

The LABASCO ’84 intervention will tackle three critical gaps limiting the growth of blind and low-vision students:

1. Braille Learning Materials

Production and donation of core curriculum textbooks in Braille

Distribution of embossed charts, mobility diagrams, tactile aids for Science, Mathematics, and Civic/Values Education

2. Assistive Devices

Provision of Braille slates, styluses, Perkins braillers, and digital audio recorders

Training on hybrid audio/Braille learning for exam-bound students

3. Teacher Support & Inclusion Training

Capacity-building workshops for teachers, caregivers, and student leaders

Introduction of a practical Inclusion Code of Conduct for the school environment

Why This Matters

Nigeria has millions of visually impaired citizens, many of them school-age children.

Most secondary schools lack basic Braille materials, forcing students to learn by listening without literacy ownership.

Without assistive tools, brilliant students are often pushed out of formal schooling, deepening poverty and dependency.

World Braille Day 2026, under the LABASCO ’84 platform, aims to break this cycle — beginning with our community first.

Speaking on the initiative, Dr. Aina Odusola, Chairperson of the World Braille Day Project Committee, said:

“This is not charity theatre. This is equity. A child who cannot see must not also be denied the right to learn. We are stepping in where systems are slow — not to embarrass anyone, but to remind everyone that inclusion is not optional in a civilized society.”

Aside from President Akindele and Dr Aina Odusola the chairman of the reunion committee, they were joined by Chief Sunday Obisesan also an Alumni of LABASCO, but 89 Set, Mr Sola Ehimisan a partner of the Project was present during the visit, the Committee Secretary, Dr. Bolaji O. Akinyemi was not left behind.

What Will Happen on 4 January 2026

The World Braille Day programme will feature:

Formal handover of Braille materials & assistive devices to a designated partner institution (details to be announced)

A symbolic joint reading session between sighted and visually impaired students

Tribute recognition for visually impaired alumni who excelled against the odds

A policy appeal urging government stakeholders present to prioritise inclusive funding in the 2026 education budget

The Chairman of Orile Agege LCDA, Hon. IDOWU Akinola Abiodun, assured the team of his unalloyed support and that of his office and promised to rally his colleague the Chairman of Agege Local Government, Mr Vinod Obasa for the Project. He remarks that the Speaker is forever a lover of humanity and he, will reiterate our message to him. He further announced the development of a 300 system ICT/CBT Centre for our school in 2026.
