VC Lauds President Tinubu’s Boost to University Funding, Announces Strategic Advancements at FUL

In a significant endorsement of the current administration’s policies, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Lokoja (FUL), has commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its notable efforts in improving university funding since taking office.

Professor Akinwumi shared his praise during the university’s 8th convocation ceremony in Lokoja, North Central Nigeria, highlighting increased financial support for education alongside initiatives aimed at expanding access to higher learning.

“President Tinubu has not only prioritized education but has demonstrated this commitment by substantially increasing university funding across Nigeria, including Federal University Lokoja.

The administration’s introduction of the student loan scheme has expanded access to tertiary education, easing the financial burden on students and making higher education more attainable,” Professor Akinwumi stated.

The VC acknowledged that although federal universities face ongoing funding challenges, the Tinubu administration’s recent support has been instrumental.

He also announced the establishment of the Federal University Lokoja Endowment Fund to further support the university’s growth.

“The increase in public universities, combined with competing national resource demands, makes it difficult for the government alone to meet all needs. This endowment will help address those gaps,” he added.

Professor Akinwumi revealed new academic expansions for FUL, including the National Universities Commission’s (NUC) approval of eight full-time academic programs to be conducted in partnership with the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State.

He highlighted the impressive student interest in FUL, with over 17,000 applicants vying for admission.

“We plan to welcome 9,000 new students for the academic session beginning November 10, 2024,” he noted.

In addition to academic expansions, FUL has embarked on a collaboration with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) as part of the Energizing Education Programme (EEP). Through this partnership, FUL will soon benefit from renewable energy solutions, providing reliable campus-wide lighting and training centers in renewable energy.

“This collaboration is set to drive a sustainable energy future and enhance both research and training capabilities at FUL,” Akinwumi emphasized.

FUL has also launched the Centre for Distance and E-Learning, enabling flexible, ICT-based learning pathways. Introduced by Professor Som Naidu, an expert in educational technology from Melbourne, Australia, this initiative showcases the university’s commitment to adapting to modern educational needs.

Further enhancing its inclusivity efforts, FUL has established an Institute of Gender Studies aimed at fostering gender equality and preventing sexual misconduct on campus. “This institute reflects our dedication to a safe, inclusive academic environment,” said Akinwumi, underscoring the university’s proactive approach to safeguarding its community.

FUL’s reputation extended beyond academics as its students earned three bronze medals in various disciplines at the prestigious 2024 All-Africa University Games.

Professor Akinwumi praised the athletes’ achievements, which showcased their resilience, teamwork, and determination, values central to FUL’s ethos. To honor their success, the university awarded scholarships and financial incentives to the athletes.

“Our students’ accomplishments bring pride to FUL, reflecting excellence in both sports and academics,” Akinwumi remarked.

The Vice Chancellor further expressed optimism about the university’s trajectory, crediting the Tinubu administration for its substantial investments in education and reasserting FUL’s commitment to innovation, inclusivity, and academic excellence.

He reiterated FUL’s dedication to building on the solid foundation of the last decade, with ambitious goals for development in research, sustainable practices, and student engagement.

“As we move forward, our university will continue to prioritize transformative education that empowers our students to meet the challenges of tomorrow. With a robust support system and strategic partnerships, FUL is well-positioned to serve as a beacon of knowledge and progress, not only in Lokoja but across Nigeria,” Akinwumi added.
