The UN Environment Programme’s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) is set to launch its annual report, “An Eye on Methane: From Measurement to Momentum,” on October 22, 2025. This report assesses progress in harnessing a methane data revolution to accelerate global methane reductions.

The report will be launched at a virtual press conference on October 22, 2025, at 12:00 pm EAT, ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP30).

The report evaluates the oil and gas sector’s progress in measuring and reducing methane emissions, highlighting the importance of data-driven tools in delivering on methane emission commitments.

Human-caused methane emissions account for roughly a third of the planet’s current warming, making reductions crucial for slowing global warming.

IMEO provides open, reliable, and actionable data to governments and companies to reduce methane emissions, utilizing satellite data and industry reporting.

The report emphasizes the need for methane reduction in the oil and gas sector, which has significant opportunities for emission cuts.

The report’s launch is timely, given the urgent need for climate action and the role methane plays in global warming. By leveraging data-driven tools and scientific research, stakeholders can work towards reducing methane emissions and mitigating its impact on the environment.
