UN Honors 6 Environmental Champions for Their Groundbreaking Work

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has just announced the recipients of the 2024 Champions of the Earth award, which is the UN’s highest environmental honor . This year’s laureates include six bold environmental leaders who have made outstanding contributions to protecting the environment and promoting sustainable solutions.
The winners include:
– Sonia Guajajara, Brazil’s Minister of Indigenous Peoples, who has been advocating for Indigenous rights for over two decades.
– Amy Bowers Cordalis, an Indigenous rights advocate who is working to restore the river ecosystem and promote sustainable fishing practices.
– Gabriel Paun, a Romanian environmental defender who has been fighting to protect Europe’s last old-growth forest.
– Lu Qi, a Chinese scientist who has worked to reverse land degradation and desertification in China.
– Madhav Gadgil, an Indian ecologist who has spent decades protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development.
– SEKEM, a sustainable agriculture initiative that is helping farmers in Egypt transition to more sustainable practices.
