Tuggar Presents Dr. Taoheed Olufemi Elias as Nigeria’s Candidate for International Court of Justice, to the Diplomatic Community

The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs in Nigeria, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has presented Dr. Taoheed Olufemi Elias, as Nigeria’s candidate for the International Court of Justice (ICJ), to the diplomatic community. Dr. Elias was nominated by the Nigerian government for election to the ICJ for the term 2027-2036 due to his exceptional qualifications and extensive experience in international law.

With over 35 years of experience in various capacities, including academia and public service, Dr. Elias is well-respected in the field of international law. Some of his notable roles include:
Member of the Institut de Droit International; Legal Adviser and Director at the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), at The Hague; President of the Administrative Tribunal of the OPEC Fund for International Development; Chairman of the Islamic Development Bank Administrative Tribunal; Former President and Member of the OPEC Appeals Committee.

If elected, Dr. Elias will be the fourth Nigerian to preside over the ICJ, following in the footsteps of his father, Taslim Elias, as well as Charles Onyeama and Bola Ajibola. The Nigerian government is confident that Dr. Elias’s election will strengthen global justice and promote peaceful dispute resolution among nations.
