Transport Minister Directs NRC on the nation’s railway Safety and efficiency

The Honourable Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Alkali, has directed the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) to intensify reforms across the nation’s rail network for efficiency purposes.

This follows recent public feedback, pointing to sectoral developments and the need for an overhaul.

The Minister acknowledged the ongoing challenges experienced within the railway sector and appreciated Nigerians for their constructive input.

Over recent weeks, passengers have noted their concerns through media reports, community fora, highlighting their daily passenger experiences as they try to board.

Senator Alkali affirmed that the concerns of passengers have given a clear, insightful, and deeply valuable perspective on the safety, reliability, and growth of Nigeria’s rail system.

The Minister said decisive actions have been taken including:

A comprehensive review of rail operations and safety protocols.

Strengthened monitoring and accountability measures for both management and frontline teams.

Improved public feedback channels to ensure transparency and provide regular updates.

He further stated that the Ministry of Transportation remains resolute in its unwavering commitment to develop a railway system that is safer, more reliable, and in accordance with global best practices.

He thanked the media for responsible reporting and for amplifying citizen concerns, noting their indispensable role in promoting transparency and accountability is well noted.

He also expressed his profound appreciation to passengers and Nigerians at large for their patience and constructive criticism, during this challenging period, emphasising that public vigilance strengthens governance and drives meaningful improvement.

Senator Alkali further commended the frontline railway staff, for their daily commitment to ensuring the system remains operational, and reiterated the government’s resolve to support them.

The Minister therefore reaffirmed the government’s dedication to transparency, collaboration, and continuous improvement, assuring that a safer and more efficient railway system will be achieved.
