Tragedy Strikes Again As Odenyi Boat Accident Claims Lives, Minister Calls for Stricter Safety Measures

In a devastating incident, a wooden boat capsized on River Benue in Benue State, resulting in the loss of lives. The boat, carrying around 70-80 passengers, was traveling from the Ocholonya community market to Odenyi in Nasarawa State. Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, H.E. Adegboyega Oyetola CON, has expressed grief over the incident and emphasized the need for stricter safety measures on Nigerian waterways.
This tragic event is not an isolated incident, as Nigeria has witnessed several boat accidents this year. In January, five people were killed, and over 30 others were rescued after a boat capsized along the Niger River in Anambra State. Similarly, in September, a boat capsized near Gummi, Zamfara State, killing at least 40 people. More recently, in November, a boat accident on the Niger River along the boundary of Kogi and Niger States claimed the lives of at least 27 people.
The Minister stressed that excessive speed and overloading were primary factors contributing to the Odenyi boat accident. He urged boat operators and users to exercise caution and adhere to safety regulations, such as wearing life jackets and avoiding overloading. The Minister also called for cooperation from states, local governments, community leaders, and other stakeholders to prevent such incidents in the future.
As Nigeria mourns the loss of lives in the Odenyi boat accident, it is essential to prioritize safety on the country’s waterways. The government and relevant authorities must work together to implement stricter safety measures and prevent such tragedies from occurring again.
