“This is first locomotive in African continent to be tested with LNG”- MD, De-Sadel Consortium, Samuel Uko

Nigeria is making history with its first-ever locomotive powered by 70% Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and 30% diesel. This groundbreaking achievement was made possible by the proactive approach of Nigeria’s Transportation Minister, Sen. Said Alkali. At the test-run of the retrofitted train locomotive on Thursday, September 9, 2024, Managing Director of De-Sadel Consortium, Samuel Uko, praised the minister’s leadership, stating that without his support, this milestone wouldn’t have been reached.
The successful test ride from Idu to Kubwa Train Station marked a significant step towards reducing operational costs and making train rides more affordable for Nigerians. Initially, the locomotive ran on 100% diesel, but the innovative retrofitting now combines LNG and diesel, paving the way for a more sustainable transportation future.
Key Benefits of LNG-Powered Locomotives:
– Reduced Operational Costs_: Lower fuel expenses due to LNG’s cost-effectiveness
– Environmental Benefits: LNG produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions compared to diesel
– Increased Efficiency: Retrofitted locomotives can operate more efficiently, reducing maintenance costs
While 100% LNG conversion isn’t feasible due to engine design limitations, this achievement demonstrates Nigeria’s commitment to embracing cleaner energy solutions. The transportation ministry will now work with regulatory bodies to implement this technology nationwide.
Sen. Alkali has been driving transportation reforms in Nigeria, proposing policies like the National Land Transport Policy to address sector challenges. His efforts have also led to collaborations with international partners, such as the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), to develop Nigeria’s transportation infrastructure .
