SENATE TO MONITOR SELECTION, PROCUREMENT, DISTRIBUTION & ADMINISTRATION OF THE COVID-19 VACCINES

The Nigerian Senate has promised to engage with the Executive arm of Government on the selection, procurement, distribution and administration of the COVID-19 Vaccines nationwide.

The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan made this submission Tuesday, in his welcome speech upon resumption for legislative business after a lengthy Christmas break.

According to him, beyond the procurement of the vaccines, there is need to be a realistic timeline for the vaccination of Nigerians.

Lawan also called on Nigerian Leaders to unite against criminality stemming from the activities of bandits and kidnappers, as well as resist the antics of divisive elements bent on instigating inter-ethnic tensions across the country especially using the social media

The Senate President, while appealing to Nigerians for calm in view of the recent inter-tribal agitations and conflicts in some states in the South West part of the country, described the development as worrisome and one that requires the immediate intervention of political leaders.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has forwarded names of new security Chiefs to the National Assembly for confirmation by the Senate. While reading the President’s letter on the floor of the Red Chamber on Tuesday, Lawan said the National Assembly will look into the confirmation of new Service Chiefs as and when due.

The Senate President also read another letter submitted by President Buhari on the confirmation of former Service Chiefs nominated for Ambassadorial positions by President Muhamnadu Buhari. This the Senate President said will be decided by members of its Committee on foreign affairs for confirmation or rejection.
The Senate later suspended plenary in honour of late Honourable Ossy Chinedu Prestige representing Aba North /Aba South Federal constituency in the National Assembly, who died after a protected illness.
