SENATE DECRIES DEPLORABLE STATE OF INSECURITY IN THE COUNTRY
The Senate has expressed palpable anger on the floor of the Senate, Wednesday as senators took turns to air their views on the deplorable security situation in the country.
The lawmakers expressed their feelings when debating a motion sponsored by Senator Borofice Ajayi and 106 other on Wednesday’s plenary. The Senators lamented that the country had moved into a state of total collapse and urged the President Muhammadu Buhari to take full responsibility for the massive security failure.
The Senate noted with deep concern the general state of insecurity in Nigeria, stating that even Abuja the Federal capital territory is not left out of this security challenges.
The Senate also observed with deep sense of concern that the security challenges have led to issuance and counter issuance of eviction notices by some ethnic entrepreneurs and groups posing as ethnic nationalist and champions.
It further observed that the nation is entering a very dangerous phase in it’s governance trajectory characterized by manufactured conflicts, fueled by ethnic and religious individuals with divisive rhetorics and amplified by irresponsible social media activists and platforms.
Continuing, they threw their weight behind the calls for a ban on open grazing of cattle and called on the President to address the nation on the grave security challenges in the country.
In his contributions, Sen. Enyinnanya Abaribe-Senate Minority Leader noted that there must be the willingness by state government to flush out criminals from their states without attaching any sentiments.
Other lawmakers who contributed to the motion, asked the Federal government to arrest and prosecute all those involved in perpetrating insecurities in the country.
The Lawmakers also urged the new service chiefs to re-engineer the nation’s security architecture which, they said, had suffered setbacks in the past years.
In a similar vein, President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has referred President Muhammadu Buhari’s request for the confirmation of the newly appointed Chief of Defence Staff and Service Chiefs to the Joint Committee on Defence, Army, Airforce and Navy for screening.
The new Service Chiefs to be screened are: Major General Lucky Irabor, Major General Ibrahim Attahiru, Rear Admiral Awwal Gambo and Air Vice Marshal Isiaka Amao as Chief of Defence Staff, Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Naval Staff and Chief of Air Staff, respectively.
