In his continued effort to ensure a credible election come 25th February, 2023, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu led the management team of the commission to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), to request for easy financial transfer and availablity of cash where necessary to enable a hitch free elections.
Speaking during the meeting on Wednesday, at CBN Headquarters, Professor Yakubu said transportation and human support services that have to be immediately remunerated either partially or in full before services are rendered, and are generally paid by means of electronic transfer to their accounts.
INEC Chairman said the Commission is encouraged by the continued willingness of the apex bank to support INEC determination to deliver credible elections on 25th February 2023 and 11th March 2023, particularly the facilitation of activities necessary for the success of the elections in an area where the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has exclusive responsibility.
“We are confident that arising from this meeting, we can assuage the anxiety expressed by some of our service providers. We are determined to make the 2023 General Election one of the best organized elections in Nigeria but we cannot do it alone.
“That is why the Commission is mobilizing every critical national institution for the success of the election. This meeting is part of this effort” he stated.
In his response, the CBN governor, Emefiele, promised that the partnership between INEC and CBN had existed before his emergence and as such, he has no reason whatsoever to change the alliance which is based on trust and confidence.
He assured INEC that CBN cannot be used to sabotage the 2024 elections.
