The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd), has dismissed reports that the Old Port Harcourt Refinery has been shut down. According to a statement by Olufemi O. Soneye, Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd, the refinery is fully operational and preparation for the day’s loading operation is currently ongoing ¹.
This confirmation comes after former Group Managing Directors of NNPC verified the refinery’s operational status a few days ago. Labour leaders, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), and Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), have also confirmed the refinery’s smooth operation after a fact-finding visit.
The 60,000-barrel-per-day refinery resumed operations on November 26, 2024, after over three decades of inactivity, following a $1.5 billion rehabilitation project approved in 2021. The refinery currently produces various petroleum products, including gasoline, diesel, kerosene, and liquefied petroleum gas.
