A ruptured pipeline at the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) loading terminal in Bonny, Rivers State, triggered an oil spill on Saturday, December 14, 2024. The spill has reached the shoreline, but swift action by SPDC and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) is underway to mitigate its impact.

SPDC promptly shut down the affected pipeline and deployed containment booms to safeguard neighboring communities. NIMASA has activated its emergency operations center to monitor the situation closely and collaborate with SPDC and other stakeholders to assess the spill’s extent and determine necessary follow-up actions.

The public has been advised to remain calm, assured that NIMASA is committed to minimizing the spill’s effects and restoring affected areas. This incident underscores the importance of prompt response and collaboration in managing environmental incidents.

NIMASA’s swift response is consistent with its mandate to ensure maritime safety and prevent environmental pollution. The agency’s efforts will help minimize the spill’s impact on the environment and local communities.
