NSIB Releases Preliminary Report on Arik Air Boeing 737 Engine Incident

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), has released the preliminary report on the serious incident involving a Boeing 737-700 aircraft operated by Arik Air, with registration number 5N-MJF.

According to the Bureau, the incident occurred on February 11, 2026, during a scheduled passenger flight departing from Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos and bound for Obafemi Jeremiah Awolowo International Airport in Port Harcourt.

During the flight, the crew reported an abnormal engine event which forced them to initiate emergency procedures and divert the aircraft to the nearest airport in Benin City. The aircraft landed safely and all passengers and crew members onboard disembarked without injuries.

The NSIB stated that the preliminary report outlines factual information gathered so far from the flight crew, air traffic control communications, flight recorder data, and the initial examination of the aircraft.

The Bureau explained that the investigation is still ongoing, with further technical examinations expected to provide additional insight into the incident.
“The information contained in the preliminary report is subject to further review and analysis,” the Bureau noted, adding that the final report will contain the agency’s conclusions as well as safety recommendations aimed at preventing similar occurrences.

The preliminary report has been made available to the public and the media on the NSIB website.
Mrs. Funke Arowojobe, Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance at the NSIB, confirmed the release in a statement issued in Abuja.
