The National Senior Citizen Centre (NSCC), the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), has come together to raise the fortune of older persons in Nigeria. To tap fully from the programs put together by the President Muhammadu Buhari led administration, the two establishments came to build capacity through the Train the Trainer Workshop on Survey Instrument for Older persons-led intergenerational Indigenous Crafts and Skills Assessment for the Development of Small and Micro enterprises.
In her welcome remarks the NSCC Boss, Dr Emem Omokaro who expressed her excitement to have the spotlight on older persons living within their communities and engaged in production and income generation. She noted that the training will clearly draw attention to older persons as assets and a force for development.
She said the train the trainers’ workshop is a product of an authentic and committed partnership between the National Senior Citizens Centre and the National Directorate of Employment NDE.
“From the first courtesy visit and NSCC’s expression of interest in mainstreaming older persons into existing and appropriate NDE’s entrepreneurship programs, to the setting up of a Technical Working Group with Terms of Reference, today is a culmination of many high level technical meetings on mainstreaming and helping to create new opportunities through the designing and /planning of NSCC’s flag ship livelihood program-Spark Age.
“NSCC has through this partnership successfully mainstreamed older persons into NDE Matured people’s program. I am happy to report that 36 older persons from 18 states across 6 Geo-political Zones are benefiaries of the Matured people loan facility to the tune of 500,000 naira each.
She noted that the Train the Trainers workshop held in partnership with NDE, is a step in the delivery of one of the NSCC’s Livelihood initiatives with capacity enhancement opportunities for older persons to continue to earn income or supplement income.
“In collaboration with National Directorate of Employment (NDE), NSCC is embarking on conducting a Nationwide Mapping of livelihood interests and prevalent Indigenous crafts and other traditional Productive Ventures engaged in by diversity of older persons in commuypities i states in Nigeria. Needs assessment is towards enhancing skills and capacities and development of intergenerational small and medium enterprises” DG said.
Commending the President and her immediate boss Emem stated, “It is fitting to recognize that the impetus for this workshop is the policy and legal frameworks for ageing and inclusion of older persons in development, made possible by the National Senior Citizens Act 2017 signed by President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Policy (2020) on Ageing approved by the Federal Executive Council through the commitment of my honorable Minister Hajia Sadiya Umar Farouq.”
Also Speaking, the Director General of NDE, Mallam Abubakar Nuhu Fikpo said tackling employment are in different phases and the nature people’s programme put together by NDE 20 years ago.
” We believe that mature people has experience to share with the young ones, so we felt we should build the confidence of the older persons to trust The Federal Government by credit some accounts that were due without delay”, he said
Fikpo congratulated the NSCC Boss for the achievements and collaborations with other agencies, especially with the NDE which has yielded great results.
