NSC Sets Fresh Guidelines for Federation Elections

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has released revised guidelines for elections into the boards of National Sports Federations (NSFs). Here are the key points:

Objectives:

– Ensure transparency and fairness in the election process
– Guarantee qualified and credible individuals are elected to leadership positions
– Promote inclusivity by ensuring representation from all geo-political zones and stakeholder groups
– Strengthen governance and operational capacity of National Sports Federations

Board Composition:

– 14 members, including:
– President to be elected through a national election process
– Vice President to be elected alongside the President
– Zonal Representatives: 6 representatives, one from each geo-political zone
– Other Representatives include: 1 Athletes’ Representative, 1 Coach Representative or Technical Official, 1 Representative of Military/Para-Military Sports, 1 Representative of International Sports body, 1 Representative of National Association of Women in Sports (NAWIS), 1 Representative of National Association of Physical, Health Education, Recreation, Sports and Dance (NAPHER-SD), 1 Philanthropist or Ex-officio member or Sponsor, 1 Representative of Association of Former Female Athletes of Nigeria (AFFAN)

Eligibility/ General requirements will include Ngerian citizenship, Minimum educational qualification of Secondary School Certificate (SSCE/WAEC), Good ethical character with no criminal record or conviction.

Specific qualifications for certain positions, such as President/Vice President will require top leadership/managerial experience and proven resource development/fundraising skills.

Technical positions will require relevant certifications and experience in sports coaching, officiating, or technical management

Election Process:

– Candidates will submit nomination forms with required documents and screened by the Electoral Committee to ensure they meet eligibility criteria

– Elections will require voting by secret ballot, with winners decided by simple majority
– Inauguration: Elected boards inaugurated immediately after declaration of results

The NSC reterated that the Updated Timelines as follows:

– Release of Nomination Forms: September 6, 2025
– Deadline for submission of Nomination Forms: September 19, 2025
– National Elections: October 18, 2025
– Inauguration of National Sports Federation Boards: October 18, 2025
