The gains of National Sports Commission Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko’s presence at the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) General Assembly in Algiers are still reverberating. A major takeaway from the General Assembly was the Chairman’s visit to the President of Algeria His Excellency Abdelmadjid Tebboune, at the State House, Algiers Algeria alongside some Executives of ANOCA and International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Mallam Shehu Dikko took advantage of the visit to convey President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR’s goodwill message to the Algerian President and the people of Algeria. He canvassed for greater collaborations between the two countries towards the advancement of sports in addition to the existing cordial commercial relationships between the countries.
Afterwards, the NSC Chairman said, “Algeria are indeed doing great things in their domestic sports through deliberate and focused investment across all sports and we would be collaborating more closely accordingly. There is a lot that both countries can do together in sports particularly considering our new RHINSE disposition where we are resetting, refocusing and relaunching Nigerian sports.
“With the tremendous strides Algeria is making in sports as I noticed during this visit, there is a lot of similarities to what we are planning to do with Nigerian sports. This General Assembly was really an eye opener to further opportunities that exist and we are always open to engagements and collaborations as we drive towards this sports economy mandate by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR. So this collaboration is very timely.”
During the meeting ANOCA presented an award to the President of the Republic of Algeria for his immense contributions towards advancement of sports in Africa while the President took time to detail his vision for sports in Algeria and Africa in general.
Notable is the very intentional and deliberate work the Algerian Government is doing to develop its domestic sports and infrastructure as key part of deepening internal security and wealth creation with a sports sector budget that ranks among top 5 in the country (ranked 2nd). The positive outcomes of this vision are very evident.
President Teboune proposed a coordinated vision for sports development in Africa hinged on the foundation of Schools Sports and close collective collaboration across all Nations in Africa, regular top level competitions to unearth the best talents and prepare them for podium finish at all international major competitions to the glory of Africa. To drive this objective, Algeria will be hosting the maiden edition of the Africa School Sports Games in July 2025 and are ready to support and facilitate the participation of all African nations.
