NRC Completes Recovery of Trailn Coaches and Locomotives After Asham Derailment

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), has announced significant progress in its recovery efforts following the August 26, 2025, train derailment at Asham. The NRC’s team of engineers has successfully re-railed and recovered all coaches and locomotives involved in the incident, which have been moved to designated workshops for comprehensive assessment and technical work.

In a statement signed by Dr Koyode Opeifa Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), has commenced a comprehensive safety and infrastructure assessment to ensure that all aspects of the corridor meet the highest standards of safety, durability, and reliability before operations resume. The main line has been repaired to a level that allows for safe resumption of operations, while work on the secondary track continues.

On the Abuja-Kaduna train derailment, NRC’s internal investigation points to human error, excessive speeding, and misapplication of the emergency braking system as contributing factors to the incident. However Opeifa noted that the corporation is awaiting the outcome of the committee set up by the Honourable Minister of Transportation and the findings of the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB).

Out of the 618 passengers on board the affected train, 22 sustained injuries, and 512 have been successfully contacted. The NRC has expressed appreciation to passengers and the general public for their patience and understanding throughout the recovery process.

The NRC reaffirms its commitment to delivering safe, efficient, and dependable rail transport services, in line with Nigeria’s broader transportation modernization agenda. The corporation has praised the professionalism of its engineering and technical team and expressed gratitude to security agencies and the Hon Minister of Transportation, Senator Said  Akalifor his support.
