NiMet Promoted 309 Staff in 2019- DG

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), has said that 309 staff of the agency were promoted in 2019.

The Director General of NiMet, Professor Sani Abubakar Mashi revealed this while addressing journalists during a media briefing on the forth coming 2020 Seasonal Rainfall Prediction at Abuja on Thursday, January 16, 2020.

“Since the coming of this Administration, Promotion Exercise in the Agency has been regular, for instance in 2019 alone: 379 Officers were promoted,105 Officers were advanced to the new grade level, 9 Officers were upgraded and 19 Officers were converted”, he further explained.

He said that there were a lot of agitations by the Unions for the review of the Conditions of Service and noted that the agency has been operating an obsolete Conditions of Service (CoS), of which he announced to the ovation of the staff, that there is a ‘new and improved’ Condition of Service for NiMet staff.

“Management in collaboration with Federal Ministry of Aviation, the Agency’s based Unions and Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment constituted a Committee to review the Agency’s Conditions of Service. After a thorough work, the document was forwarded to the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HOSF), through Federal Ministry of Aviation for consideration and approval. In December 2019, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation approved the Conditions of the Service for the Agency. We have already published copies of this noble document for distribution to all staff of the agency”, he explained.

He further explained that the CoS document will help the their privileges and entitlements.

“This, indeed, is a historical day in the life of this agency because the Condition of Service clearly spells out the entitlements of every staff of this noble agency.

“For this, I say a very big congratulation to the management and staff of NiMet and of course, all the trade Unions in the agency who have been partners towards achieving this feat”, Professor Mashi added.

News Dot Africa also confirmed that there is a lot improvement on staff welfare and training last year such as payment of hundred percent end of year staff motivational incentive(ex-gratia)­, payment of accumulated relativity allowance, prompt payment of all staff claims and training and re- training of effective service delivery, of which over 100 staff attended international training, workshops and technical symposia.

Professor Sani Mashi said that 2020 Seasonal Rainfall Prediction (SRP), that holds on Tuesday, January 22 at Abuja will highlight vital information that may affect socio-economic activities in the air, land and water transportation, agriculture, water resources, disaster management and mitigation, tourism, sports, health, building and construction, energy sectors etc in the course of the year.

“Forecast information that have been provided include: the onset and cessation dates of the 2020 rainy season; the downscaled total amount of rainfall expected in all the 774 Local Government Areas of the country; temperature forecast as well as malaria and meningitis forecast. The socio-economic implications of the expected rainfall and temperature patterns for major sectors of the economy will also be discussed during the event” he noted.
