The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), is gearing up to introduce special identity cards for senior citizens above 60 years and vulnerable individuals in Nigeria. This initiative is aimed at providing them with unique services and special privileges.
According to Peter Iwegbu, Director of Card Management Services at NIMC who Day 2 of Media engagement of NIMC with the Association of Online Editors, the commission is collaborating with the Senior Citizens Centre to make this project a reality. The special card for senior citizens is expected to launch in the first quarter of 2025.
In addition to the senior citizens’ card, NIMC is also working with about 20 agencies and stakeholders to create another card for vulnerable individuals. This card aims to facilitate the distribution of palliatives by the government when needed.
The new card will be a single multipurpose card (GMPC) that can be used for various purposes, including payments, government services, travel, and more. This development is a significant milestone for NIMC, which has been working to address challenges that previously stalled card issuance.
Under the leadership of Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, NIMC has achieved notable successes, including the restoration of outdated systems, introduction of new nationwide systems, and renovation of offices to include biometrics. A robust customer care service has also been established to respond promptly to enquiries on social media platforms and others.
With approximately 5.8 million senior citizens in Nigeria, NIMC is committed to catering to their needs. The commission’s efforts to provide special ID cards for senior citizens and vulnerable individuals demonstrate its dedication to promoting inclusivity and accessibility in the country’s identity management system.
