Abuja, April 9, 2026: Nigeria’s strategic importance to the stability of the West African sub-region took center stage on Thursday, as top government officials reaffirmed the country’s leadership role while unveiling new regional anti-corruption initiatives.

Speaking at the Voice of Nigeria (VON) Forum 2026 in Abuja, Director-General of VON, Mallam Jibrin Baba Ndace, described Nigeria as the “pillar of stability” in West Africa, stressing that its leadership remains critical to sustaining democratic governance across the region.

The forum, themed “51 Years of Nigeria’s Role in Deepening Democratic Stability in ECOWAS,” highlighted the country’s contributions to the resilience of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) since its establishment in 1975.

Ndace warned of growing threats to democracy in the region, including unconstitutional changes of government, electoral tensions, declining public trust in institutions, and youth disillusionment. He noted, however, that Nigeria’s uninterrupted democratic journey since 1999 offers a model of resilience.

Also speaking, Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, emphasized that Nigeria’s national stability is closely tied to developments across West Africa.

He reiterated the country’s longstanding commitment to regional peacekeeping, mediation, and democratic integration.
According to him, Nigeria’s leadership is driven not only by its size and population but by sustained diplomatic and financial investments in regional security. He pointed to the 2001 ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance as a landmark in strengthening rule of law and electoral credibility within the bloc.

Jibrin further underscored the role of legislatures in ensuring accountability, pledging continued collaboration between Nigeria’s National Assembly and regional counterparts to address emerging governance and security challenges.

In a significant development, Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Olanipekun Olukoyede, announced plans to expand the agency’s operations beyond Nigeria’s borders.

He disclosed that the EFCC is set to begin cross-border investigations within the ECOWAS sub-region under a newly adopted protocol that enhances intelligence sharing and cooperation among anti-corruption agencies.
Olukoyede revealed that a Network of Anti-Corruption Agencies in West Africa has been established to tackle financial crimes and terrorism financing, noting that the initiative will be operational in the coming months.
“There will be no restrictions in carrying out investigations across West Africa. We will collaborate, share intelligence, and strengthen efforts to stabilize the region,” he said.

Highlighting the commission’s achievements, he cited successful asset recovery efforts and used the VON headquarters as an example of proceeds of crime recovered from a former public official.

However, he expressed concern over what he described as partisan narratives surrounding high-profile corruption cases, urging the media to uphold professionalism and avoid misinformation that could undermine public trust.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, dismissed claims that Nigeria is on the brink of collapse, describing such assertions as unfounded.

He pointed to improving economic indicators, including a reduction in inflation from about 30 percent in 2024 to around 15 percent by the end of 2025, as well as foreign reserves surpassing $50 billion for the first time in over a decade.

Idris also noted that Nigeria’s GDP growth has exceeded 4 percent, while foreign direct investment is on the rise, reflecting renewed global confidence in the economy.

On security, he highlighted the federal government’s allocation of ₦5.41 trillion to the sector in the 2026 budget, alongside the rescue of over 2,000 kidnapped victims by the armed forces in 2025.

Reaffirming Nigeria’s regional leadership, the minister disclosed ongoing efforts to mobilize $2.5 billion annually to support a proposed 260,000-strong ECOWAS counter-terrorism force.

He commended VON for its role in public diplomacy and its contribution to projecting Nigeria’s image globally through multilingual broadcasting.

The event drew several high-profile dignitaries, including former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (Rtd), as stakeholders collectively emphasized the need for unity, strong institutions, and sustained democratic values to secure the future of West Africa.
