Nigerian Shippers Council Reiterates Commitment to Anti-Corruption Efforts

The Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC), has reaffirmed its dedication to combating corruption and promoting transparency in the maritime sector. This commitment was made during a courtesy visit by the Technical Unit on Governance and Anti-Corruption Reforms (TUGAR), to the NSC’s Executive Secretary, Mr. Akutah Pius Ukeyima, in Abuja.
Mr. Ukeyima emphasized the importance of interagency collaboration and synergy in achieving the council’s mandate. He noted that the NSC has been working closely with various agencies to reduce corruption in Nigerian ports.
The Executive Secretary also highlighted the challenges faced by the council, including funding issues. However, he expressed optimism that the council’s financial situation would improve with the inclusion of the 1% freight fee in this year’s budget.
Furthermore, Mr. Ukeyima commended TUGAR’s efforts in promoting interagency collaboration and removing rivalry between law enforcement and government agencies. He encouraged TUGAR to continue its good work, emphasizing that agencies should work together to achieve their mandates rather than competing against each other.
The visit was seen as a significant step towards strengthening the partnership between the NSC and TUGAR in the fight against corruption and promoting good governance in the maritime sector.
This visit comes as the NSC continues to promote fair trade practices and efficient economic regulation in the transport sector. The council has been actively engaging with various stakeholders to enhance the country’s maritime industry.
Recently, the NSC Executive Secretary, Mr. Akutah Pius Ukeyima, commended the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) for its achievements, which he noted would spur the growth of the Marine and Blue Economy sector.
The NSC has also been working to promote Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in the ports sector to assure investors’ confidence. Additionally, the council has established a complaint handling and dispute resolution initiative, which has saved Nigeria over N6 billion in recent years. This visit comes as the NSC continues to promote fair trade practices and efficient economic regulation in the transport sector.
