The Gulf of Guinea is a critical maritime environment, accounting for 15% of global oil consumption and 5-6% of global oil production. With proven oil reserves of approximately 50-60 billion barrels, the region plays a vital role in the global energy landscape. However, the region faces significant maritime security challenges, including piracy, oil theft, and illegal fishing.

The symposium, themed “Maritime Security and Sustainable Development in the Gulf of Guinea,” will bring together heads of navies and coastguards from Gulf of Guinea countries, as well as representatives from regional and international organizations. The event will feature strategic sessions on regional and international cooperation, maritime domain awareness, and legal and regulatory frameworks for maritime security operations.

The Nigerian Navy, in partnership with the European Union and the French Navy, is committed to promoting maritime security and safety in the region. The symposium will provide a platform for naval and coast guard practitioners to share ideas and best practices, deepen the implementation of the Yaoundé Code of Conduct, and develop tools to implement contemporary maritime security strategies.

By hosting this landmark symposium, the Nigerian Navy is demonstrating its commitment to promoting maritime security and cooperation in the Gulf of Guinea. The event is expected to have a significant impact on the region’s maritime security landscape, promoting sustainable development and economic growth.
