Nigerian Navy rescues 59 persons from drowning in turbulent waters but lose One Officer

In the treacherous waters of the Okpobo River entrance, a daring rescue operation unfolded on July 30, 2024. The Nigerian Navy received a distress call from MV AMBIKA 4, a dredging vessel on the brink of sinking. Without hesitation, Lieutenant Commander Gideon Yashim Gwaza led a team of brave personnel into the turbulent waters.

As the rescue mission commenced, the force of the waves proved relentless. Undeterred, the Nigerian Navy deployed additional resources, including ships, drones, helicopters, and a squadron of boats. The operation lasted for 10 grueling hours, from midnight to 10 am.

In the end, all 59 crew members were saved, but the victory came at a steep price. Lieutenant Commander Gwaza accidentally fell overboard during the rescue, sacrificing his life to save others. The Nigerian Navy mourns the loss of a true hero, whose bravery and selflessness will never be forgotten.
