Nigeria is set to replace its visa-on-arrival policy with a seamless e-visa system, aiming to boost tourism and trade. According to the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the new system will eliminate redundant steps, allowing travelers to receive their visas digitally before arrival.
The previous visa-on-arrival system required applicants to apply online, receive approval, and then undergo another process at the airport to obtain a physical visa sticker. The new e-visa system will streamline this process, providing a QR-coded visa electronically, and enabling travelers to proceed directly to immigration upon arrival.
Key Benefits of the New E-Visa System:
- Efficient Application Process: Applicants will receive approval and a digital visa before their journey.
- Reduced Processing Time: The new system eliminates the need to visit a visa-on-arrival counter, reducing processing time at the airport.
- Enhanced Security: The e-visa system is integrated with global security watchlists, ensuring background checks are completed before applicants arrive in Nigeria.
- No Additional Costs: The fees remain the same as the previous visa-on-arrival process, ensuring affordability for travelers.
The minister emphasized that the new system aims to promote Nigeria’s foreign direct investment and tourism, making it easier for legitimate travelers to explore the country’s rich culture, do business, and invest in the economy. The e-visa system is expected to commence in April, with the government finalizing the application platform and ensuring availability to all eligible nationalities based on security clearance.
