Nigeria and Pakistan Strengthen Defence Ties, Badaru Calls for Enhanced Collaboration

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has emphasized the need for enhanced defence industry collaboration between Nigeria and Pakistan. During a meeting with a high-level Pakistani delegation led by General Shahir Shamsad, Badaru praised Pakistan’s cost-effective counter-terrorism strategies, citing their potential as a model for Nigeria’s security advancements.

Key Areas of Cooperation
The two nations plan to focus on critical areas, including:

  • Drone Technology: Collaboration to enhance Nigeria’s capabilities in drone technology, leveraging Pakistan’s experience in using affordable drones to combat terrorism and IEDs.
  • Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON): Advancements within DICON to boost local manufacturing capacity and innovation in military hardware, with Pakistan’s support and expertise.

Mutual Benefits
General Shahir Shamsad acknowledged Nigeria’s significant role in Africa and substantial geo-strategic importance to Pakistan. Both countries believe deeper cooperation will yield mutual benefits, enhancing military capabilities, promoting mutual understanding, and deepening trust.

Nigeria and Pakistan have maintained friendly and cooperative relations, anchored on mutual respect, shared challenges, and aligned strategic interests. Both countries are members of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and the Commonwealth of Nations, providing a solid foundation for expanding collaboration in the defence sector.³
