The Network of Women for Sustainable Development (NeWSD), has strongly condemned the six-month suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from the Nigerian Senate. The suspension, which was recommended by the Senate Committee on Ethics and Public Petitions, cited alleged misconduct.

In press release signed by the Founder and Director of NeWSD, Dr Salamatu Jidda-Fada, NeWSD described the suspension as a “gross miscarriage of justice” and a “direct affront to democratic principles and constitutional rights”. The organization emphasized that the suspension violates the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, particularly Sections 36(1) and 39(1), which guarantee fair hearing and freedom of expression.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended after protesting the reassignment of her seat during a Senate plenary session. However, NeWSD argued that the suspension was a deliberate attempt to silence her courageous voice, which advocates for justice, equity, and transparency.

The organization’s Founder and Director, Dr. Salamatu Jidda-Fada, stated that NeWSD stands in solidarity with Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and demands her immediate reinstatement. Dr. Jidda-Fada emphasized that the suspension undermines democratic norms and sets a dangerous precedent that can silence dissenting voices, especially those of women in leadership.

NeWSD urged all Nigerians, especially women and progressive allies, to rise against this injustice and defend the sanctity of democratic institutions. As the world marks International Women’s Day, NeWSD reaffirmed its commitment to supporting women in leadership, demanding accountability, and upholding justice.
