NDMA 2024: First Lady OluRemi Tinubu Commends NiDCOM Chairman, Applauds Nigerians in Diaspora

In a commendable display of national pride, the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator OluRemi Tinubu, extended her heartfelt appreciation to the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Dr Abike Dabiri-Erewa for celebrating Nigerians in the Diaspora for their contributions to the socio-economic growth of Nigeria.
Senator Tinubu made the commendation during the National Diaspora Merit Award held yesterday in Abuja.
She acknowledged the invaluable contributions of Nigerians living abroad towards the growth and development of the nation.
Addressing the gathering, She praised the dedication and hard work of Nigerians in the diaspora, emphasizing their role as vital stakeholders in the country’s progress.
The First lady highlighted the numerous ways in which they have positively impacted various sectors, ranging from remittances to innovative initiatives that bolster Nigeria’s economy.
“The contributions of our compatriots abroad are significant and cannot be overstated. Their efforts in various fields have greatly contributed to the growth and development of our beloved nation,” Senator Tinubu remarked.
The First Lady also called on Nigerians in the diaspora to continue being exemplary ambassadors of Nigeria, urging them to uphold the nation’s image and values in their respective host countries.
She stressed the importance of collaboration between the diaspora community and the Nigerian government, stating that collective efforts are essential for national advancement.
“We need to work hand-in-hand to achieve our goals. The government alone cannot do it. I urge you all to maintain your integrity, uphold the values of our nation, and continue to work with the government to foster development,” she charged.
Senator Tinubu’s commendation of the NiDCOM Chairman underscores the Commission’s efforts in fostering strong connections with Nigerians abroad and ensuring their contributions are recognized and integrated into national development strategies.
Earlier, the Chairman of NiDCOM, Hon. Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa said the commission was celebrating Diaspora excellence.
NiDCOM Boss expressed with delight that the Nigerians in diaspora are all contributing one way or the other to the development of the growth of Nigeria.
“Why do we give awards because it would encourage you to work harder and contribute more and we are so proud.” She said
She congratulated the recipients of the National Diaspora Merit Award 2024, praising them as trailblazers who have made remarkable contributions globally.
“Your achievements are a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of Nigerians everywhere.” she added
Also, the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, Mr. Abiodun Akanbi, said the event not only celebrates the outstanding achievements of our compatriots abroad but also underscores the importance of their contributions to our nation’s growth.
Akanbi while acknowledging the First lady, said her support is a testament to the nation’s appreciation for the over 20 million Nigerians in the diaspora who excel in their respective fields.
Mr. Akanbi highlighted the significance of the awards.
“The contributions of our diaspora to national development are enormous and cannot be overstated. Tonight, we recognize and celebrate these efforts.”
The Secretary of NiDCOM, Engr. Dr. Sule Yakubu Bassi, provided an overview of the NDMA.
He emphasized the importance of acknowledging the contributions of Nigerians abroad, who annually remit an average of $20 billion back home, impacting various sectors such as agriculture, education, health, and ICT.
The objectives of the NDMA are clear: to recognize impactful contributions, project awardees as role models, and highlight the positive image of Nigeria through the achievements of its diaspora.
Categories for the awards include agriculture, ICT, medicine, and more, each representing areas where Nigerians have made significant strides both locally and internationally.
As the evening progressed, the contributions of Nigerians in the diaspora were celebrated through various awards.
This year’s awardees were selected through a rigorous process, reflecting their consistent impact over the past five years.
Engr. Dr. Bassi, praised the efforts of all involved in making the event a success.
