Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Executive Vice Chairman/CEO, Dr. Aminu Maida, delivered a keynote speech at the 93rd Telecoms Consumer Parliament, emphasizing the need to optimize data experience for consumers. He highlighted the transformative impact of high-speed data on Nigerians, enabling widespread adoption of social media, e-commerce, and online banking.

Dr. Maida noted that Nigeria’s daily data usage has increased by 39% to 336 gigabytes per second, with Nigerians spending an average of 4 hours and 20 minutes on social media daily. However, consumers have expressed concerns over data depletion and billing transparency.

To address these concerns, the NCC has launched a Joint Industry Campaign on Consumer Awareness on Smarter Data Usage, aiming to educate consumers on effective data management. The commission has also issued a Guidance on Tariff Simplification, requiring operators to provide clear information on data plans and pricing.

Key Initiatives being implemented include:

Joint Industry Campaign: Educating consumers on smarter data usage through radio, TV, newspapers, and SMS
Guidance on Tariff Simplification: Requiring operators to provide clear information on data plans and pricing
Major Incident Reporting Guidelines: Mandating operators to inform consumers of major incidents impacting their networks
Coverage Maps: Providing consumers with information on operators’ network strength across the country

Dr. Maida reaffirmed the NCC’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and quality service delivery. He emphasized the importance of collaboration across the value chain to ensure high-quality telecom services.

The speech underscored the NCC’s focus on creating a consumer-centric telecom industry, where consumers feel valued, informed, empowered, and satisfied with the services they receive.
