The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), has issued a reminder to all international airlines operating in Nigeria to strictly comply with the currency declaration directive for inbound passengers. The directive requires passengers to declare any currency or Bearer Negotiable Instruments (BNI) exceeding $10,000 USD or its equivalent upon arrival in Nigeria.

This is contained in a statement signed by Mr Micheal Achimugu, Director Public Affairs and Consumer Complaints where he outlined the procedure as follows;
– Inflight Announcements: Airlines are required to make announcements informing passengers of their legal obligation to declare excess currency.
– Currency Declaration Forms: Airlines must distribute forms onboard for passengers to complete before landing.

Achimugu who disclosed that the NCAA has received reports of non-compliance emphasizes that full implementation is crucial, adding that the Authority will closely monitor compliance and impose sanctions on non-compliant airlines.

The directive is part of Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen its Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) framework, aligning with international standards and obligations.

The NCAA urges all international airlines operating in Nigeria to adhere to these requirements to support the country’s efforts to align with global financial standards.
