Aniedi Udofia
On May 29th, 2024, President Bola Tinubu assented to the National Anthem Bill 2024 reverting to the old national anthem, “Nigeria, we hail thee”, nearly five decades after ‘Arise, O Compatriots’ became the national anthem. The President also confirmed ‘Nigeria, we hail thee’ as the country’s “latest national anthem” when he joined a joint sitting of the National Assembly to mark the Silver Jubilee Of Nigeria’s 4th Republic.
The impact and significance of Nigeria’s new national anthem on the economy is a topic of debate among political analysts, commentators and Nigerians especially at a time Nigeria is facing insecurity challenges, High inflation, Unemployment and depreciation in Naira.
Here are some points to consider:
– No direct economic impact: National anthems are symbolic representations of national identity and unity, and they do not have a direct impact on a country’s economy
– Potential indirect impact: An anthem can inspire patriotism and national pride, which can indirectly impact the economy by fostering a sense of community and promoting national development.
– Unity and stability: A national anthem can contribute to a sense of unity and stability, which are essential for economic growth and development
– International perception: A national anthem can shape international perception and influence tourism, foreign investment, and trade, ultimately affecting the economy
– Divided opinions: The change in the national anthem has elicited mixed reactions from Nigerians, with some supporting the move and others expressing disappointment and disconnection from the new anthem
First stanza lyrics to Nigeria We Hail Thee?
Nigeria, we hail thee,
Our own dear native land,
Though tribe and tongue may differ,
In brotherhood, we stand,
Nigerians all, and proud to serve
Our sovereign Motherland.
