INT’L HUMAN RIGHTS DAY:UN-POLAC calls for more advocacy on human rights and peace building

United Nations-Positive Livelihood Award Centre (UN-POLAC), called on Nigerians to ensure that the upcoming general elections were free, fair, credible and well conducted in a peaceful atmosphere for the interest of unity.

To this end therefore, the organization is mobilizing peace advocates and youths across the six geo-political zone to preach about peace.

The Deputy Country Director,UN-POLAC, Peter Ohagwa stated this in Abuja, at the appointment of international peace advocates/award to mark 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in commemoration of the 2022 World Human Rights Day.

Ohagwa said: “With out peace in this nation, whoever that seems to be a president will not enjoy and he cannot do well for Nigeria, what Nigeria needs is sustainable peace.

“When there is peace, I believe that there will be progress, when is peace and there been many things we will get, what we are saying ahead of 2023 election is that the youths should maintain peace.

“All we need is peace. Let our fathers, the politicians, let them allow, who cap fit to wear it. Is not by bribing and creating problems to disorganize the right person to take the right position. I believe that is the only true peace, who can make it. So all I’m saying that youths should go for peace.”

In his remarks, director member management , UN-POLAC, Josiah Onuoha who stressed the need for more advocacy on human rights, urged the United Nations to appoint Nigeria human rights activists to ensure that the declaration is obeyed by all nations

Also speaking, Director of Projects and Women Affairs, United-Nations POLAC, Dr Cynthia Obiora, said that the aim of United Nations is to ensure that the POLAC peace advocacy for Nigerians get to the grassroots of society.

Dr Obiorah said appointing individuals as volunteers is aimed at assisting in the implementation of United Nations Millennium Development Goals now Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and also promote UNESCO Culture of Peace programme

She explained that there is also need to empower for active participation in governance and development of the nation.

“UN-POLAC is so passionate about women and children, thus our mandate in empowering rural women towards contributing their quota in peaceful coexistence in the country.. “When you empower a women by giving her education. She will not only maintain the home front,but also promote the course of peace and development of the society”

Earlier in remark, the Secretary general, UNPOLAC, Mrs Patricia Agu, reiterated the commitment of UNPOLAC in advancing the course of peaceful coexistence in the forth coming general election in the peaceful

“We assist on democratic elections, bringing emergency relief and fostering practices which contribute to conflict prevention and resolutions”

Mrs Agu also charged the awardees of peace ambassadors to do more in adding value to the society and country at large.

Highlights of the events was award presentation and appointment of peace advocates to eminent Nigerians who have distinguished themselves in service to humanity and nation at large.
