INEC will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the elections continue to get better- Prof. Yakubu

Chairman , Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, had said that the Commission will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the elections continue to get better and ensure that Nigerians determine who they want in the 2023 general election,

Prof Yakubu stated this during a working visit by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Mahamat Saleh Annadif in Abuja.

The INEC Chairman who commended UNOWAS for being supportive of INEC during the conduct of elections in Nigeria, also assured that the Commission will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the elections continue to get better.

He noted that the commission’s mandate to do what is right on the basis of the law to have a free and fair elections in 2023, said it will continue to uphold the choice made by Nigerians.

“Nigerians will determine who they want in the 2023 general election and we will continue to uphold the choice made by Nigerians. “So I want to assure you that we will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that our election continue to get better and better and the democratic environment is increasingly consolidated. We look forward to seeing you again before and during the election.”

He disclosed that Nigeria with about 84 million registered voters so far, has 11 million more registered voters than the 14 countries in the sub-region, which share 73 million voters; adding that INEC will continue to do what needs to be done for the peace and stability of the sub-region.

Earlier, the (UNOWAS), representative, Annadif said United Nations will continue to support Nigerians to attain peaceful election.

Annadif pointed out that Nigeria has always set a good example for other African countries, expressing joy on the candidates for the various political parties that have already been selected. ,
“The UNOWAS covers 15 countries including Mauritania and we are here when Nigeria is preparing to hold its elections in 2023. For us, the peace, stability and security in the region depends also on Nigeria. The United Nations will always be supportive of Nigeria to ensure peaceful elections.
“We congratulate you and we support you again for the work being done and the work that will be done in terms of preparing the elections, the UN will be always supportive of Nigeria” he said.
