The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash O. Amupitan (SAN), has reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to conducting free, fair and credible elections in Nigeria through strengthened collaboration with security institutions.

Amupitan gave the assurance on Monday in Abuja while receiving members of the Alumni Association of the National Institute for Security Studies during a courtesy visit ahead of the association’s forthcoming annual lecture.

Welcoming the delegation led by the association’s President, Mike Ejiofor, the INEC Chairman described the visit as a demonstration of the strong link between national security and credible electoral processes.
He noted that the institute plays a critical role in strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture by training senior officers across the armed forces, police and other intelligence agencies.

According to him, the theme of the association’s forthcoming second annual lecture, “Credible Election and National Security in Nigeria,” is both timely and significant.
“The theme highlights the interconnectedness of credible elections in fostering national stability, peace and security,” Amupitan said.

He stressed that as Nigeria continues to deepen its democratic system, credible elections remain the bedrock of the country’s democracy and a key factor in maintaining national stability.

The INEC Chairman therefore emphasized the need for strong cooperation among security agencies, policymakers and other stakeholders to ensure transparency, fairness and adequate protection during electoral processes.

Amupitan also commended the Alumni Association for its commitment to capacity building among security professionals, noting that such efforts contribute to strengthening the country’s resilience against threats capable of undermining democratic governance.

He reiterated that INEC would continue to deploy innovative approaches and deepen collaboration with relevant institutions to safeguard the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system.

The Chairman expressed optimism that the upcoming annual lecture would provide a platform for meaningful discussions on the relationship between credible elections and national security.
He thanked the delegation for the visit and wished the association a successful and impactful event.
