INEC, Media Practitioners parley to ensure transparent and credible Elections in Edo

In a bid to ensure transparent and credible elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has highlighted the pivotal role of social media and the INEC News platform in the electoral process. Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman stated during a presentation at a forum for Media Executives in Benin City, Edo State, ahead of the 2024 Edo State Governorship Election.
Mr. Oyekanmi emphasized INEC’s commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible elections, ensuring every vote counts, and reinforcing the pillars of Nigeria’s democracy. He stressed the importance of social media in disseminating real-time information, engaging with the electorate, and providing instant updates to correct misinformation.
However, he also acknowledged the challenges associated with social media, including the spread of fake news and restrictions on information sharing. To address these challenges, Mr. Oyekanmi called on media professionals to collaborate with INEC, verify information before dissemination, and promote accurate and unbiased reporting.
He also highlighted the importance of the INEC News platform as a reliable source for election-related information, encouraging the public to rely on it for updates and avoid fake news. The forum marked a crucial step in preparing for the Edo State Governorship Election, with INEC’s engagement with the media and public through social media expected to play a vital role in ensuring a transparent, credible, and peaceful electoral process.
