INEC, MEDIA PARLEY: Promote Peaceful Elections and Curb fake news ahead of Ondo State Governorship Election Prof Mahmood tells Executives

Ahead of Ondo Governoship elections coming up on Saturday, November 16, 2024, the Hon. Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Prof. Mahmood Yakubu has called on the Media to intensify efforts towards fostering the conduct of a peaceful election and to provide accurate coverage of the electoral process ahead of the Governorship Election in Ondo State.

Prof. Yakubu made this appeal on Friday, 1st November 2024 at the Commission’s Fourth Quarterly Consultative Meeting with Media Stakeholders held at INEC Headquarters in Abuja.

During his address, he highlighted the media’s essential role in combating disinformation and safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process.

He acknowledged the heightened political activity in Ondo State and urged journalists to report responsibly emphasizing the need to counteract fake news that could undermine a stable electoral environment. “I appeal to the media to intensify your accurate reportage that will ensure peaceful elections, especially now that campaign by political parties and candidates is in full swing,” he stated.

He also highlighted the Commission’s proactive efforts to identify and address potential flashpoints in collaboration with security agencies.

The INEC Chair reflecting on preparations, commended the Commission’s collaboration with the media to boost public awareness of INEC’s initiatives. He expressed gratitude for the media’s contributions particularly in supporting the successful distribution of over Sixty Four Thousand (64,000) Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) in Ondo State, achieving a collection rate of 71.6%.

Emphasizing the importance of media engagement in ensuring transparent elections, Prof. Yakubu announced that INEC has accredited One Hundred and Twelve (112) national and international media organizations including newspapers, radio, television and online platforms for the Ondo State Governorship Election. These outlets will collectively deploy over Seven Hundred (700) personnel including journalists, technicians and other staff to provide thorough coverage. The full list of the accredited media organizations and deployment information will be accessible to the public on INEC’s website and social media channels for public access.

Prof. Yakubu reaffirmed INEC’s dedication to a strong collaborative relationship with the media, reflecting the importance of their role in promoting peaceful and credible elections. He concluded by encouraging media organizations to uphold their commitment to delivering accurate, unbiased information thereby supporting a fair electoral process in Ondo State and beyond.

In response, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) President, Comrade Chris Isiguzo, urged authorities to prioritize journalist safety stressing that a free and protected press is vital to a credible democratic process. Marking the 10th International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, Isiguzo’s call emphasized the risks journalists face especially in crises like elections. “Journalists must be able to work without fear or interference, and it is essential that the security of media professionals is assured,” he said. The NUJ reiterated its commitment to fair and unbiased reporting while combating misinformation, urging collaborative efforts to uphold democratic values.

INEC and the NUJ jointly reiterated their commitments to transparency, accountability, and democracy safeguarding.

With the Anambra State Governorship election approaching, INEC reassured stakeholders of its ongoing engagement and preparedness, underscoring its commitment to a smooth and orderly electoral process.
