The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed as false and misleading claims circulating on social media alleginpg that its Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, endorsed a partisan post on X (formerly Twitter).
In a statement issued by the Chairman’s Chief Press Secretary, Adedayo Oketola, the Commission described the allegation as a fabrication orchestrated to tarnish the image and neutrality of its leadership.
INEC clarified that the Chairman does not operate any personal account on X and has never engaged in partisan commentary or political activity, either publicly or privately.
The Commission noted that the viral post is a calculated attempt to undermine public confidence at a time when it is focused on key electoral reforms and preparations for upcoming elections.
It also raised concerns over the activities of cybercriminals who have continued to create fake social media accounts in the Chairman’s name to deceive Nigerians. According to INEC, several of such accounts have previously been identified and reported to security agencies.
Reaffirming its stance, the Commission warned that it would not tolerate efforts to damage the credibility of its leadership, adding that it is working with security and cyber-intelligence agencies to track down those responsible.
INEC stressed that identity theft and the spread of fake or manipulated online content are punishable under the Cybercrimes Act, assuring that offenders will be prosecuted.
The Commission urged the public to ignore the false claims and rely only on verified official channels for information, reiterating its commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible elections.
