Marilyn Monroe is to this day one of the most iconic names and faces in Hollywood. Ms Monroe, who tragically died in 1962, starred in many historic films which saw the blonde bombshell act out some of the most famous scenes in film history. Among these is the iconic moment in 1955 film The Seven Year Itch where Marilyn’s character “The Girl” has her white silk dress blown up over her waist as she stands on a subway grill in New York City.

While a celebrated moment in Hollywood, and one of the most notable moments of Ms Monroe’s career, the scene was said to have left her husband at the time, Joe DiMaggio, “horrified”.

In Documentary “Marilyn Monroe: The Mortal Goddess”, Marilyn’s friend James Haspiel explained: “She [Marilyn] understood her skirt would be blowing up, and she noticed in the mirror that you could see through the panties.”

He continued: “So she requested and put on another pair of panties. In the dressing room it covered the problem, but outside on the street with 5,000 onlookers and under the lights, it didn’t cover the problem.”

The narrator explained how for New Yorkers watching the filming this was “the greatest show on earth”, but for Joe “the leering crowds offered a public humiliation.”

Biographer Donald Spoto explained how Joe was “horrified” because “his wife’s dress was blowing over her knees, blowing higher than her waist”.

The documentary reveals how Marilyn’s body had “always provided the key to her success”.

They explain: “For Monroe, the display was a public celebration of her sexual and professional power, but for Joe, Marilyn’s exhibitionalism could no longer be confused with her professional responsibility.”

His embarrassment and jealously is said to have “quickly given way to anger”.

In 1954, Marilyn filed for divorce from the famous baseball player.

Marilyn’s old friend James Haspiel said: “I think that marriage was dead the day they married.

“There are issues that occurred in that household that have never been made public, and I think in the end it wasn’t really Marilyn or Joe who made that decision.”

He claimed: “I think the big boys at Fox walked into that house and said ‘you’re out of here’, because they had to protect their property.”
