In a move aimed at empowering Nigerian youth and reducing transportation costs, the government will launch the first phase of its tricycle distribution project on Tuesday, October 1st.
This initiative, which is set to distribute 2,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) tricycles by the end of the year, targets informal youth workers in the transportation sector.
The Minister of State for Youth Development,Comrade Ayodele Olawande made the disclosure during a press conference to mark the anniversary of Nigeria ‘s 64th Independence Day Celebration.
Comrade Olawande expressed that the project will significantly cut down fuel costs for tricycle riders, many of whom are young Nigerians. With the introduction of CNG tricycles, riders are expected to spend only 20 percent of what they currently spend on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), ultimately boosting their earnings.
He added that the initiative was designed to reduce the cost of transportation for passengers, providing a more affordable alternative for commuters.
The Minister urged Nigerian youth to take advantage of existing programs while showing support for further development initiatives.
“I would like to use this opportunity to again plead with fellow youth to embrace the programs we have initiated and to give the government a chance to do more. The future of this country lies on the shoulders of the youth, and President Bola Tinubu is willing to give the youth the key to the future they deserve,” he stated.
He noted that the CNG tricycle distribution project is part of broader efforts by the administration to promote sustainability, lower carbon emissions, and improve living conditions for Nigerians through economic empowerment initiatives.
He emphasized the role of youth in maintaining unity. “As our forefathers fought to deliver an independent nation to us, I believe that we, the youth, are also willing to fight today to keep a united country for our own children. We must never, for whatever reason, allow ourselves to be used as agents of destruction,” said Olawande.
He expressed optimism about the nation’s potential for greatness, urging young Nigerians to unite their efforts to achieve it.
“Nigeria has the promise of greatness, and we must pool our youthful energy together to achieve that greatness.”
Concluding with a message of hope, he said “Have hope in the Renewed Hope Agenda. It is possible—we can do it.”
