The Minister of Youth development Dr. Jamila Bio-ibrahim has said the National Youth Service Corps has served as focal Points in this Country even if Nigerians are agitating for the Scheme to be Scrapped.
Ibrahim dropped this hint at the inauguration of the Reform Committee for the restructuring of the Scheme (NYSC) which took Place in her Office in Abuja.
According to her “Since the establishment of the Scheme Over 60 Years ago, we have Seen that Modern things are actually Coming up and we have initiated various Programs that had turned the lives of Young people around through the Scheme”.
“There have been Opinions from different quarters to Scrap the Scheme despite it serves as Symbol for National Unity and integration for the Country because it is such a vital Scheme, an impacted one as well, that has served as model to other countries across the globe”, Jamila added.
She further stated that “even from North to the South of the African Continent as well as across the globe, we have seen other Countries Modelling the NYSC and then taking it back home”.
This really shows that it’s a scheme that we need to be proud of, meaning that it’s something we are doing right and we have to sustain it even if they are clamouring for it to be Scrapped then the rest of the world are seeing it as a model.
According to the Minister, all these agitation for scrap of the scheme now necessitated constituting a committee to oversee a comprehensive review of the Scheme.
She stressed that the aim is to re-allign NYSC with Contemporary economic and Social needs thereby transforming it to dynamic skills centre institution that will significantly contribute to the Multi-national development and Youth empowerment.
In his response on behalf of the Committee,Prince Oyekunle Oyewumi who is the Chairman expressed the Committee,s determination to do a good job for an impressive outcome.
Earlier in his address, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Olubunmi Olusanya while welcoming and congratulating members of the committee admonished them to work diligently to come out with positive outcome.
