FOOTBALL: Competition resumes after break around Europe

The international break is over and we have football returning in the major leagues in Europe. We look at a roundup of the games that were played on Friday and Saturday

Kane gives Bayern slim win

Harry Kane scored the only goal in the game last night as Bayern Munich defeated Cologne in the Bundesliga.

The England forward’s goal was his 18th in 12 games this season as he continues his impressive performance since joining from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer.
He scored from close range after the attempt by Erik Chuopo-Moting was cleared off the line.

Ligue 1: PSG outclass Monaco in a five – star performance

Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha and Randal Kolo Muani were all in the score sheet when Paris St Germain delivered a comfortable 5- 2 performance against AS Monaco.

Takumi Minamino and Folarin Balogun scored for the visitors in what was mere consolation.

The Parisians play Newcastle United next in the champions league.

Premier League: Havertz heads Arsenal to the top

Kai Havertz scored a late header after coming from the bench to give Arsenal a narrow win in Mikel Arteta’s 200th game as Arsenal coach in the Premier League.

The Gunners who missed out on the winning the league last season had a goal chalked off in the first half but Brentford FC felt unlucky after exceptional clearances off the line from Declan Rice and Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Ten-man Chelsea thumped at Newcastle

Newcastle United got back to winning ways after they recorded a 4-1 victory over Chelsea on Saturday.

Alexander Isak drew first blood for the Magpies with a composed finish beyond Chelsea goalkeeper, Robert Sanchez but Raheem Sterling restored parity with a delightful free kick.

Jamaal Lascelles scored a header to put the Magpies ahead before Joelinton and Anthony Gordon put the game beyond Chelsea who finished the game with ten men after Reece James received his marching orders for two yellow cards.

Liverpool and City settle for a draw

Erling Haaland became the fastest player to reach 50 Premier League goals after he scored against Liverpool today at the Etihad Stadium.

The Norwegian did this in just 48 games since his transfer from Borussia Dortmund last season that culminated in him winning the treble.

Manchester City’s inability to finish off the game despite having better chances was punished by an equalizer by Alexander-Arnold with a strike from the edge of the area and see the game end 1-1.

La Liga: Barcelona held by Rayo

A Florian Lejeune own goal gave FC Barcelona a 1-1 against Rayo Vallecano in the La Liga on Saturday.

Unai Lopez’s stunning strike had put the home side ahead and stun the defending champions who were very wasteful infront of goal.

The scoreline means Barcelona are stuck in third position as second-placed Real Madrid play Cadiz on Sunday before leaders Girona entertain Athletic Bilbao on Monday.

Bundesliga: Leverkusen back to top with emphatic win

Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen defeated Werder Bremen 3-0 to equal the best start in the history of the league and go top of the proceedings.

Olivier Deman scored in his own net to give Leverkusen the lead before Jeremie Frimpong and Alex Grimaldo scored the others to level with the 11 wins and one draw after 12 games matches by Bayern Munich in 2015-16.
